Paragraph is relaunching the LGBTQ Writers Salon on Zoom in September. Before the pandemic, the literary salon was space for LGBTQ writers to meet, mingle and discuss writing in an informal setting. With the same goals in mind, we are hosting the salon on zoom focusing on the discussion aspect (as we sadly cannot mingle on zoom). This month’s guest will be Diana Goestch and is titled The Three Practices.
This event is 100% FREE and OPEN to all LGBTQ writers and allies.
The Three Practices
Poet and nonfiction writer Diana Goetsch will join us to discuss the three practices—“outer,” “inner,” and “secret”—needed for sustained writing at a high level. The subject is particularly relevant to queer and trans writers, who find it hard to discern when feedback from editors is biased, and when it is trustworthy. We can’t afford to mistake bias for helpful criticism, or criticism for bias, and having the three practices in place can give us vital clarity and confidence.
Diana Goetsch is a poet and nonfiction writer who has published several books, and whose work has appeared in the New Yorker, Poetry, Gettysburg Review, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Pushcart Prize and Best American Poetry. In 2016 she wrote the “Life in Transition” blog at The American Scholar. Her memoir, This Body I Wore, is forthcoming from Farrar, Strauss & Giroux. Goetsch is also a renowned teacher of writing, who has been on faculty at various colleges and conferences, and leads regular workshops at Paragraph. www.dianagoetsch.com
